These look more like spring rolls than baklava. I've made the more traditional square or triangular stacks of layers numerous times, but today I just wanted to approach it from a different perspective. Also the nut filling is a different take from the traditional one, this consists of pecans and Brazilian nuts instead of pistachios or walnuts. maple syrup

baklava cigars  
  • 1 pack of phyllo dough 
  • 1 stick of butter, melted
  • 1 cup of Brazilian nuts and pecans 
  • 1/4 cup of sugar
  • 1/4 cup of maple syrup 
  • 1/2 cup of sugar 
  • 1 cup of water 
  • 1 tsp vanilla  
  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.
  2. Place nuts into a food processor and ground with sugar, then set aside.
  3. Lay out phyllo dough and butter from edge to edge. Sprinkle with nut/sugar mixture.
  4. Roll up and cut into desired lengths.
  5. Bake until golden brown, about 20-25 minutes. Remove from oven.
  6. Heat water and sugar until sugar is melted. Add in maple syrup and vanilla, boil for 20 minutes.
  7. Pour syrup over baklava and soak for 20 minutes before serving.
